7 Expensive Decorating Mistakes

Before you buy another sofa, dining table, or light fixture, read this.

We’ve all been there.

You find a beautiful sofa online. It looks perfect in the showroom or on Instagram, so you order it. A few weeks later it arrives and suddenly the room feels too crowded, too empty, or simply doesn’t feel right.

The truth is, creating a beautiful home isn’t about buying expensive furniture. It’s about making thoughtful decisions in the right order.

Here are the seven mistakes I see most often.

1. Buying Furniture Before Planning the Room

The biggest mistake isn’t choosing the wrong sofa. It’s choosing the sofa before you’ve planned the room. A floor plan should always come first. It determines how people move through the space, where conversation happens, and how the room feels every day.

2. Choosing Size Based on the Showroom

Furniture always looks different in a large showroom than it does at home. Measure your room. Tape the furniture dimensions onto the floor. Leave enough space to walk comfortably. Scale is one of the biggest differences between a home that feels effortless and one that feels cramped.

3. Buying Everything From One Store

A home becomes interesting when it tells a story. Mix different brands, natural materials, vintage pieces, custom details, and objects collected over time. That’s what creates warmth and personality.

4. Following Trends Instead of Your Lifestyle

Trends come and go. Your home should work beautifully five or ten years from now, not just until next season. Invest in timeless pieces, then add personality through artwork, textiles, and accessories that can evolve over time.

5. Forgetting About Lighting

Lighting changes everything. The right lighting makes a room feel warm, inviting, and sophisticated. Layer ceiling lights with table lamps, floor lamps, and accent lighting instead of relying on a single bright fixture.

6. Ignoring Storage

Beautiful homes aren’t just styled well, they function well. When everything has a place, a home naturally feels calmer and more luxurious.

7. Designing for Photos Instead of Real Life

Pinterest and Instagram are wonderful sources of inspiration, but they don’t know your family, your routines, or how you actually live. The most successful interiors aren’t copies of someone else’s home, they’re designed around your lifestyle.

My Design Philosophy

Whether I’m designing a home in California or Switzerland, my goal is always the same:

Create interiors that feel calm, timeless, and deeply personal. I believe every home should combine beauty with functionality, using thoughtful layouts, quality materials, and carefully selected pieces that reflect the people who live there.

Because great design isn’t about having more. It’s about choosing better.
